Tabs in gmail are a great way to organize and filter your emails. This helps you find the messages that are important to you quickly. It also helps you avoid distractions from other things and makes it easier to focus on the emails that matter.
Gmail uses machine learning to sort your email based on a variety of signals including who the sender is, what type of content they are sending and how you have interacted with their messages in the past. There are many different ways that you can help Gmail to learn your preferences so that it can better direct your mail into the right tabs and categories for you.
Creating new tabs in gmail
You can create new tabs for specific topics that you are interested in by using labels. These are a much more powerful and useful way to sort your email than just using the tabs that are built into Gmail.
The first step in creating new labels is to click the ‘New Label’ button from the left sidebar beneath the tabs section. This will allow you to add a new label and appropriately name it. Once the label is created, you can add all the emails that you want to be sorted into that specific category by clicking on the corresponding tab.
Another way to use labels is to move them from one tab to another by dragging and dropping or using the ‘right click’ menu. You can even star an email to have it automatically starred in the appropriate tab for you.
Adding labels and moving messages around may seem like a lot of work, but it’s worth it for the convenience and organization it offers. Plus, if you have a particular topic that you’re trying to stay up-to-date on, labels are a great way to make sure you don’t miss any communications related to it.
You can create and remove tabs in gmail by using the settings panel. This option is available on the web and mobile devices.
On the web, click Settings near the top right near your profile photo which looks like a gear icon. From there, scroll down and click See all settings.
Next to the ‘Inbox type’, select Default. From there, check the boxes for the categories that you would like to have as inbox tabs and click Save changes.
If you want to hide any of the tabs that are not currently used, you can conceal them by checking the ‘Conceal’ box and clicking ‘OK’. Alternatively, you can delete any of the tabs that you do not want to use by checking the ‘Delete’ box and clicking ‘OK’.
There are a few other options to customize your tabs in gmail, such as how you view your unread messages or how you count the number of unread messages. You can even decide whether or not to display yellow tabs that tell you an email is important.
You can also change the priority of emails that you receive by choosing an inbox that you are more likely to read first, such as the ‘Priority’ or ‘Important’ inbox. These options will let you choose what percentage of your unread messages are important compared to all other messages.
